The eighth-largest city in the U.S., San Diego is one of the most livable and sustainable major metropolitan areas in the nation. An innovative pioneer in the smart growth movement, the San Diego region has no shortage inspiring models for creating transit-oriented, compact development; transforming downtowns and ethnically diverse, older neighborhoods; designing walkable, mixed-use urban villages; preserving parks and open space; military base reuse, and fostering the emergence of leading high-tech, telecommunications and clean-tech businesses.

In this video series, Pema Chödrön teaches us how to work with our fear and anxiety using gentleness and inquisitiveness. We learn to do this through the practice of meditation which leads us to befriend our fear, and helps us find peace in our lives. Pema Chödrön is one of the senior teachers (Acharyas) of Shambhala, and author of many books including Start Where You Are, When Things Fall Apart, and The Places That Scare You. Everyone is welcome to join us for any or all of the Tuesday evening screenings of her powerful talks on this subject, based on the book "Smile at Fear" by Chögyam Trungpa. Suggested donation: $5 each evening.

A framework for the sustainability of San Diego's historic district of North Park.
Sustainable North Park Main Street (SNPMS) is a broad, yet very grounded vision of a greener future for North Park. Applying simple interventions across North Park’s historic business district, SNPMS proposes a coordinated approach to sustainability. It involves building owners, business operators, and the community in creating a lasting framework for economic prosperity, community action, and an improved urban environment.
Hosed by Art Produce, the Sustainable North Park Main Street gallery show presents the results of a broad scale re-envisioning of North Park’s commercial corridors, developed by young volunteer architects working in conjunction with various community and sustainability stakeholders. Imagined within the larger context of North Park, five key intersections in North Park are illustrated as they would appear if a number of simple – and very feasible – sustainability measures were to be brought together in a coordinated fashion. These measures include building retrofits, new business practices, and public improvements that work together to support the goal of greening North Park.
