Evan Tyler
2022 Artist in Residence October-December 2022 We are very excited to announce a new partnership with UCSD’s Black Studies Project, Community Engagement Residency. In our inaugural project with BPS we have invited 2022 Artist in Residence, Evan Tyler, to continue his residency at Art Produce with support from the BSP community artist grant. Evan plans to continue his recent series of explorations dealing identity and self-perception through weaving and embroidery with natural dyed fiber. More about the residency:
"Throughout the next portion of the residency at Art Produce, I will continue my exploration of self-identity and self-perception through fiber arts. As a black person living in the USA during 2020 it was tough to stay motivated and push myself to create, but it was the only thing I felt I had control of. My current series of “glitch” weavings are a call back to June 2020 when people across the social media platform, Instagram, posted black squares in “solidarity” with the Black Lives Matter movement. What may have started out as a form protest or stand against police brutality and racism quickly (d)evolved into people (individuals/businesses/companies/institutions) posting a black square to simply inform followers that they are not racist. In some instances people even felt forced to post a black square because they felt if they didn’t they would be perceived as racist. I was left asking myself “was this black square supposed to end racism? Also, what’s next?” After posting a black square did the activism stop there or did that black square simply disrupt your IG feed for a moment? My work also seeks to explore the juxtaposition of using ancient techniques, such as hand-weaving and natural dyeing, and attempting to make it look digital and errored. Thank you again to Sara, Angela, and the UCSD Black Studies Project as well as Lynn and the entire Art Produce team, the Community Artist Grant will help me and my practice out so much." - Evan Tyler Follow Evan on Instagram: @all_things_dyed |
