"I started as an intern at Art Produce through a Museum Studies course at Mesa College in the winter of 2015. Having studied Environmental Systems and art at UCSD, Art Produce proved to be a perfect example of a space where these two practices could coexist and support each other. While interning, I not only felt like part of the Art Produce family, but also gained experience running events, gardening, and restoring artwork. Since then, the internship has led me to numerous opportunities and collaborations in the San Diego art community. I am so lucky to have been part of such an amazing space!" Jodi Fong
"I think it's very interesting how learning happens at Art Produce. I think it's really different compared to the teacher-student model that we usually see in education where there is one teacher that teaches all the students. Lynn mentioned "horizontal learning," and I could definitely see that last Saturday [in the community art class ]. I think it's very neat that we can learn just as much from the participants as they learn from going to Art Produce. I want to work in education, so these things are often on my mind." Read Jodi's essay about Art Produce, "The Third Space: A Community Art Center as Public Space of Community Engagement" Jodi is a McNair Scholar from UCSD. The McNair Program provides low-income, first-generation college students, and students from groups underrepresented graduate education, with effective preparation for doctoral study. The McNair Program is part of the UCSD Academic Enrichment Programs. "At Art Produce I have found making art with the community and participating with many different people has helped me develop a more universal understanding of what art can be. While leading the “Make It Yourself Community Art Class” I watch the progression of participants through their process and development as their awareness of their own art grows. As an artist Art Produce has been a place for me to come and engage with people and art in a new way. Art Produce is constantly expanding my own understanding of what art is every day." |
