In response to the challenge to create an immersive environment for the CONNECT Design Competition at SOFA Chicago, SDSU's Furniture Design and Woodworking graduate seminar class has created a space exploring ideas of mobility, inhabitation, creativity, display, and commerce. The Expanding Gallery is a portable-modular-gallery-lounge-space that can be transported by freight on custom pallets. The system of panels unfolds to become seating, flooring, walls, lighting, and display space based on needs of the user and the individual contexts created by each of the objects on display.
Now the Expanding Gallery has returned home to San Diego and is reworked for presentation at Art Produce. After the exhibition, the Gallery will be handed over to SDSU Arts Alive. Arts Alive aims to increase the exposure of the visual and performing arts across the SDSU campus. They will use it as a portable pop-up exhibition space for shows of student work on SDSU campus for years to come.
