About the Exhibit:
Inside/Outside is an exhibition showcasing a collaboration between incarcerated Project PAINT participants and respected San Diego and Los Angeles based artists. This show highlights asynchronous collaborations between participating artists who were never physically able to meet, but who regularly communicated through written correspondence and worked to visually convey a shared vision, using a diverse array of media. Both the finished pieces and communications will be on display.
*The opening reception on Saturday, May 4 will include a panel discussion, featuring Lead Project PAINT Teaching Artist and project creator Kathleen Mitchell, additional Project PAINT staff, and participating outside artists, moderated by Project PAINT Founding Director Laura Pecenco, starting at 6:00 pm. A reception with light refreshments will follow.
**On May 11, during the North Park Festival of Arts, members of the public will be invited to participate in the collaboration! From 12:00-5:00 pm, come learn more about the prison system, Project PAINT, and this specific exhibition – you’ll have the chance to meet Project PAINT staff and participating artists and to contribute, through visual art and/or writing, to a collaborative piece with an incarcerated artist.
Project PAINT: The Prison Arts INiTiative is a visual arts organization at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility.
All proceeds from sales help to provide additional prison arts programming.
