Sofia Gonzalez
February 20th to April 11th 2020 Cooler Room Artist in Residence About the project: As Artist-in-Residence, I plan to use the Art Produce Garden and North Park neighborhood to source natural materials to create botanical dyes and pigments. By respectfully engaging with the Garden, local restaurants, and resident weeds, I will continue an ongoing sculpture series titled “Portraits of Place.” These soft, layered fabric sculptures become portraits of a specific place and the feelings associated with that place through plant dye, color, and aroma. Using herbs and weeds from the Garden and vegetable waste like avocado pits from the local neighborhood, "Portraits of North Park” will be hyper local and directly representative of the place. I hope to engage with the local neighborhood for natural dye workshops and drop-in dye days to share the joy of natural color and the possibilities of the plants in our environment. |
